BJ Wambold Wins New York State Compact Championship From Sixteenth

By STEVEN PETTY

OSWEGO, NY (August 30, 2024) - BJ Wambold scored the win on Friday night in the New York State Compact Championship at the Oswego Speedway. The victory earned Wambold a $1,000 payday.

CJ Zukowski and Joey Warren led the field to the green flag for their 20-lap event to cap off the Friday portion of Classic Weekend, with Warren in the lead. Mike Cole took over the lead on the backstretch working lap two. Cody Edelman brought out the race’s first caution on lap three. Cole continued to show the way as Greg Moldt moved into third place.

Wambold started 16th on the grid and worked his way through the field, going four wide. By lap six, he was entering the top five. Wambold took third as Moldt raced in second place. Wambold used the outside of the track to take over the lead on lap eight and checked out on the field. After a lap 14 caution bunched the field back up, Wambold took off in the lead with Tony Pettinelli racing in second place. Wambold went on to score the win.

“We had to be patient and make passes, and the car handled like a Cadillac,” Wambold said in victory lane.

Wambold also ran the fastest lap of the race, with a 22.693-second lap around ‘The Steel Palace.’ Pettinelli finished in second and was followed to the line by Maggie Wambold, Micah Adams, and Greg Moldt.
