Brotherly Battle: Brad and Bryan Haynes Finish One-Two in Exciting Pathfinder Bank SBS Duel

OSWEGO, NY (May 16, 2021) - In the first ever one-two finish for a pair of brothers at Oswego Speedway, Brad and Bryan Haynes swapped the lead in a tremendous battle for the win in Saturday night's 30-lap Pathfinder Bank SBS main event, with younger brother Brad snagging the victory and the bragging rights in his No. 88 machine.

Brad Haynes took the lead from the outside pole on lap 1, with brother Bryan wasting little time to move into second just two circuits later.

From there, the fight was on.

Bryan had several runs down to the inside of his brother down the backstretch, but it was not until lap 22 that he was finally able to get the bite he needed off the corner to make a run and take the lead going into turn three.

However, a slower car hung up the former SBS Classic Champion’s No. 86 machine off the exit of turn 2 on lap 24, with Brad capitalizing to schnooker the lead back with five to go.

It was the second career Oswego victory for Brad Haynes, who won his first ever SBS main in a Twin 20 feature late in the 2019 season.

“I didn’t know what to think, my brother was pushing me the whole race and I definitely did not have the car he did,” Brad admitted in victory lane. “ I have to thank everybody down here, my family, my crew, Ron Pratt, for making this happen. It was awesome.”

When asked what it was like to run with his brother, Brad said, “Well, there is nothing at all polite about it, running your brother is about the worst thing you can do out here, but I hope we put on a good show for the fans and everyone appreciated it.”

Bryan, who has now podiumed in back to back starts to begin the 2021 season, had equally as much fun swapping the lead with his brother, although he of course had hoped to come out on the winning end.

“That was a blast,” offered Bryan. “How often do you get to race against your brother and swap the lead back and forth? We have done it before for pretty much every other spot, but never for the lead. I had the faster car, but it is so hard to pass right now, when he got me in that lapped traffic that was it. Thanks to our parents, our crew, and everyone that works on the cars to make this happen for us. “

The man who had the best seat in the house for the brotherly battle was another former SBS Classic Champion, Cameron Rowe, who came home a strong third with the RBI Racing No. 77.

“The car was good, I didn’t have power steering after lap 10,” mentioned Rowe. “These guys were swapping like crazy, I tried to pick a good lane, but they did a great job and held me off. I have to thank our new sponsor Rock Emergency Services. We struggled all day, but finished the night strong here, so this is good. We will take a top three today.”

The 30-lap feature presented by Oswego County Media Group was led to green by Dennis Rupert and Brad Haynes, with Haynes stealing away the early lead from Rupert.

However, the yellow flag was thrown almost immediately for a hard crash down the backstretch involving Josh Sokolic and Opening Night winner Dan Kapuscinski. Both cars were done for the night.

On the original restart, it was again Brad Haynes using the high side to grab the lead away from Rupert going into turn one.

As the field crossed the start finish line to complete lap 3, Bryan Haynes found his way under Rupert, quickly positioning himself in the runner up spot.

A second caution flag was thrown on lap 7 for rookie Joey DeStevens, who lost the handle on his No. 05 and got into the inside hub rail down the backstretch. DeStevens also went off on the hook.

The ensuing restart brought the Haynes brothers side by side in the front row, with Brad able to prevail from the inside lane, but he would have to do it all over again.

Caution lights were put on immediately for fourth running Tony Pisa, who had found his way by O’Connor Racing teammate Dennis Rupert for fourth, but spun coming out of turn two.

The Haynes Brothers would re-rack and re-stack on the front row for another time and it was again the same outcome with Brad Haynes inching out in front.

For over a dozen laps, Bryan worked his brother over down the backstretch, making a run down to the inside nearly every lap, although he was not able to complete the pass.

A Pisa spin on lap 17 brought the field together again for a door banging double file restart between the Haynes Brothers.

Brad and Bryan exited turn two side by side on this particular green flag, but were slowed when Griffin Miller spun his No. 9 in turn one and collected Rupert and Greg O’Connor.

After the string of cautions, the field was finally able to stay clean and green.

Bryan kept trying the same move to the inside and it finally worked for him down low on lap 22, but once he checked up for the traffic two laps later, that sealed his fate, handing the lead and the win back to Brad with five laps to go.

Podium finishers Haynes, Haynes, and Rowe put a significant gap on the rest of the field with Brian Sobus and rookie Noah Ratcliff finishing top ten.

O’Connor, James Babcock, Pisa, Rupert, and Mark Denny Jr. completed the top ten.

Oswego Speedway is off on Saturday, May 22, and will return for the rescheduled 64th running of Budweiser International Classic Weekend on Memorial Day Weekend.

Classic main events for the Novelis Supermodifieds, Pathfinder Bank SBS, and J&S Paving 350 Supers will be held on Saturday, May 29.

Time trials for all three divisions plus racing for the Sunoco New York Super Stocks and New York State Compact Tour will be held on Friday, May 28.
