"Today the staff and management of Oswego Speedway extends our thoughts and prayers to the Smith family following the passing of one of the great guys in Supermodified racing; former driver and dedicated crewman Bobby Smith. ‘Smitty’ crewed for Joe Gosek and his No. 00 virtually from the beginning before hopping behind the wheel of a car for the first time in 1984. Five years later, Smith started his first International Classic in Norris McDonald’s No. 27, returned in 1991, and eventually competed full-time throughout the entire 1992 and 1993 seasons behind the wheel of the McLaughlin No. 48 and later the Crucitti No. 11. He then returned once more with the 11 car in 1998 and 1999 before brief stints behind the wheel in 2002 and 2003 with the Witkum No. 85. After an overall best effort of 11th in points plus starts in five International Classics, the conclusion of ‘03 is when Smith finally decided to go back to crewing for Gosek on a week by week basis. With the No. 00 is where Bobby has remained ever since, including for Gosek’s most recent victory on ‘Retro Night’ last season. Also a retired Oswego Firefighter, father, and a friend to many, many people, Smith had a significant presence in the community. The absence of his always friendly personality and smiling face will forever leave a void to be filled in the Oswego Speedway pit area. We’ll miss you Bobby."
