OSWEGO, NY (May 29, 2018) - Camden Proud returned as driver of the Proud Motorsports, Step One Creative No. 54 Small Block Super at Oswego’s Tony White Memorial 35 this past weekend and drove to a sixth place finish in the season opening main event.

After unveiling the team’s new Step One Creative scheme a week earlier, Proud was back in action on May 26 for Oswego’s 68th annual Opening Day which began with time trials for the Small Block Supers.

The No. 54 timed also qualified at sixth fast this past weekend, but that was not a reflection of the lap put together by Proud as the 18.734 turned in matched the fastest official lap for Camden’s career.

An astounding twelve cars were under the nineteen second bracket in time trials and the top nine all ran 18.7 seconds, showing how tough the competition was going to be throughout the night.

“I knew right away that we had a good car under us,” Proud said. “I wasn’t even on it as much as I could have been and we turned an 18.7 lap to match the best run of my career. I caught traffic by the time I ran the seven, but we could have probably had a high 18.6 the next lap. This car will go even quicker.”

When the twenty three car invert set up the lineups for heat race action the No. 54 lined up sixth in heat two and by the end of 10-laps, Camden was able to drive up to a fourth place finish to grab his handicap starting spot for the 35-lap Tony White Memorial.

Proud started in the seventh position in the main event and fell back a handful of spots to ninth after an accident bottled the field up on the start.

Camden was able to dodge another accident to get up into the sixth spot and stayed there for the remainder of the race, despite nearly squeaking out a top five in the last lap.

He was awarded Lighthouse Lanes Up & Comer Award winner for his efforts. It marked the twelfth time in Proud’s career that he has been the highest finishing driver to never win a feature.

“I was a little hard on myself this weekend, “Proud admitted. “We started off real good with a great time trial and a pretty solid heat race. Starting on the inside just out of the top five, I thought we’d definitely have a shot at being on the podium. The car stumbled on the original start, then I let myself get out of rhythm on the long runs. I was just off. There a couple of things we need to correct before coming back on June 9.”

Following Opening Day, Proud will begin the season sixth in the 2018 ‘Road to the Championship’ for the Pathfinder Bank SBS division. The team will continue to search for their first win at Oswego next Saturday, June 9 when A&P Auto Parts presents a 30-lap main event for the Small Block Supers.
