OSWEGO, NY (April 19, 2014) – A solid field of 63 entries filed through Oswego Kartway’s main gate on Friday night, only to see the feature racing washed away due to heavy showers after the qualifying heats.
For the second consecutive season a sizeable field showed up for the Kartway’s non-point opener, used as a warm-up event before the championship season begins on Friday, April 25.
Despite the shortened program, two brand new Kartway classes debuted on Friday evening.
Stock Flathead 425 and Clone 425, designed for drivers weighing 200 lbs. and over, took the green flag for the very first time at the Bullring with great results.
A total of 10 racers took advantage of the new divisions with Kirk Smith taking the heat race win in Stock 425, his first career checkered flag at the Kartway, and Mike Desimone grabbing the win in Clone 425.
Other heat race winners on Friday included Alex Losurdo, Seth Perrin, Madison Baum, Logan Abbott, Seth Baum, Jake Sivers, Tom Perrin, and Joe Hayden.
Intermittent rain began to hit the Speedway nearly as soon as qualifying heats began at 7:30pm, with track officials doing all they could to run events off as quickly as possible before the showers gained intensity.
Unfortunately, by the end of the qualifying heats the rain became too much, as the clay track surface turned slippery and the showers intensified.
Due to Friday night’s race being a non-point event, the rained out feature events will not be made up.
The official Championship schedule for 2014 begins on Friday, April 25 with the running of the Gater Racing News Kartway Kick-Off. Pit gates will again open at 4:30pm with hot laps at 6:30pm and racing at 7:30pm.
Racer entry fees will be set at $15 for members and $18 for non-members, which include pit passes. Separate pit passes will be available for $10.
Track officials will determine this coming week whether or not carload spectator parking will be permitted around the Kartway on April 25, depending on the condition of the parking lots.
Kartway events run April through September on most Friday nights, culminating with the Fall Frenzy 200 Championships on Saturday, September 20.
