After an incredible start to the 2011-racing season at Oswego Speedway, this weekend is a well placed, perfectly timed break in the action.  It’s high school graduation weekend in the area, which traditionally is a down weekend at local racetracks.  It’s a perfect time for management, teams and fans alike to exhale, catch their breath, and get ready for the hectic month of July.
A quick look shows that King of  Wings is just a couple of weeks away, and not too much further away than that is Race of Champions Weekend.  Throw in a pair of regular race nights along the way, and July will be a full speed ahead month.  A week off now seems to be just what the doctor ordered.

There’s no doubt that Harry is up there with a big smile on his face.  With everything that has gone on since the start of the 2011-racing season at Oswego Speedway, Harry Caruso most certainly approves.  It’s not just one thing that has him giving the thumbs up. All around the “House that Harry Built”, there are reflections to days when the guy that used to sit in the director’s chair ran the show.

The positive momentum just keeps growing at Oswego Speedway. Where do we begin though? Do we begin with the full pit area of supermodifieds? How about even getting the races in, when rain circled the Oswego area all Saturday afternoon, but word was out early that the races were a go. Looking in the grandstand, it was pretty full despite the threatening skies.  Turning to the speed of the show, can anyone beat getting a full show in by 9:15pm? That adds to my next point, that it was very noticeable seeing so many kids in the pits after the races, getting to chat with their favorite drivers or getting autographs. That doesn’t even get into the action on the racetrack itself.

Team cars showed the way Saturday night at Oswego Speedway, as Double Deuce Racing and Crow Motorsports each grabbed first and in feature races at Oswego Speedway.  David Gruel shot to the lead on lap 2 of the supermodified 50-lap main event, with teammate Pat Lavery chasing him the rest of the race for the supermodified win.  Andrew Schartner survived a first turn incident on lap 9 of the SBS race, and cruised ahead of Kreig Heroth for the Crow Motorsports sweep in the 30-lap SBS main.

Many might not realize the fact that Price Chopper came into existence on November 17, 1932, when Ben and Bill Golub opened one of the first  "one stop shopping" self service supermarkets in the country. With the boldness that became a hallmark of the family, the brothers opened a second market a few months later. As new stores continued to open, the Central Market chain became known as the trendsetter among the area's grocery businesses. Central Market began with that one store in Schenectady, and by the late 1950s there were 25 stores throughout upstate New York and one in Massachusetts. In 1973 the name was changed to Price Chopper.  In 1976  the company expanded to Vermont, and in 1982 expanded to Pennsylvania.

The general sentiment through the pit area after Opening Night was, let’s move on to week two.  It was also said that the best thing about opening week was, there is a second week.  Saturday night had a little bit of everything.  There were a lot of cars, but there weren’t a lot of cars that through the night clean.  There was big time oil down, and multi car wrecks, but we still were done really early.  There was a big dark cloud over the speedway during the heat races, that sent everyone pitside running for covers for their cars, but somehow it missed us.  The racing gods sure were with us last Saturday night.  Just when something looked like it may put a damper on the night, it just as quickly went away.
