First Time Victors Dominate Oswego's Small Block Super Win Column

OSWEGO, NY (July 16, 2014) – Just eight races into the 2014 Pathfinder Bank Small Block Super season at Oswego Speedway, four different drivers have reached victory lane for the first time, collecting five total main event victories between them.

Oswego High School standout Anthony Losurdo, Mike Bruce, Jon Tesoriero, and now third generation driver Alex Hoag have all joined the Speedway’s all-time Pathfinder Bank Small Block Super win list with victories in 2014.

Bruce, the most seasoned veteran of the group, has actually visited victory lane twice this season with wins in the Speedway’s Spring Championship on May 31 as well as a Grand Prix victory on July 5.  Driving the Woodchuck Saloon No. 22, Bruce stands sixth in overall driver points, just three markers behind another first time winner.

Losurdo, who ranks fifth in the driver standings driving the Lighthouse Lanes No. 1, went to victory lane on June 7 as a part of the first round of the Shea Concrete ‘Steel Palace’ ISMA Super Series.  Losurdo outgunned Hoag and Camden Proud for victory on the first weekend in June to lead the youngest trio of podium finishers in Speedway history.

With three top five finishes on the season, Losurdo trails former Pathfinder Bank Small Block Super champion Kreig Heroth by only five points for fourth in the championship.

With a podium finish on June 7, Hoag got a glimpse of victory lane in the National Parts Peddler Newspaper No. 73, and would finally reach Turning Stone Resort Casino Victory Lane just last Saturday with a King of Wings VI victory.  The son of Oswego Speedway Hall of Famer Dean Hoag and grandson of legendary driving veteran Dutch Hoag, Alex now extends his family legacy at the Speedway with another Hoag victory.

Despite not starting the first main event of the season back in May, Hoag’s stellar 2014 campaign still sees him riding eighth in the overall driver standings trailing Tesoriero by 14 championship points.

Tesoriero himself is the fourth first time winner so far in 2014, driving to a win at the Speedway on June 21 in the Four Sevens Motorsports No. 47.  A former dirt sportsman driver, Tesoriero has adapted to asphalt racing with great precision in recent years, riding seventh in the driver standings with five top ten finishes on the year.

While first time winners have dominated victory lane this season, its two veterans filling out the current win column.

Pathfinder Bank Small Block Super point leader Andrew Schartner has two victories on the season, being the first two main events of the year coming on May 10 and May 24.  Schartner, in the Crow Motorsports No. 18, holds an 86-point advantage on Jack Patrick in the race for the series championship.

Joining Schartner with a victory this season is Jason Simmons in the Team Tapout No. 98, with a main event win on June 14.  Simmons, who collected his first Oswego feature win in 2013, had issues last Saturday dropping him to ninth in the championship battle.

With the Summer Championship, presented by C’s Beverage Center and Crop Production Services, now on the horizon Saturday, the question becomes who could be the next driver to join the ranks of first time Speedway victors?

Young pilots Proud and Josh Kerr no doubt lead the charge.

Behind the wheel of the Step One Creative No. 54, Proud has impressed this season with five consecutive top ten finishes at just 15 years of age.  The son of former SBS and Supermodified racer Tim Proud, Camden continues to display the tools and smarts of a veteran driving in his homebuilt Small Block Super.

Kerr has had a breakout season of sorts in the Roofing Trade Services No. 8, riding in the top ten in points nearly the entire season.  With two top five finishes and five top ten runs, Kerr is no doubt knocking on the door step of a podium finish.
